Over the last few months, U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans (R-CO) has been declining interview requests from 9News, a widely respected news outlet, but he’s found time to take questions on NTD News, a sister company of Epoch Times, which has been shown in multiple investigations to boost Trump and spread misinformation, including vaccine, QAnon and election fraud conspiracies.
Evans also promoted his NTD appearance in a recent edition of his congressional newsletter, writing, “I joined The National Desk to talk about the House budget updates and my bill to protect immigrant communities from foreign retaliation.”
In fact, Evans was on a network called NTD, which stands for New Tang Dynasty, not The National Desk.
If you go to the Epoch Times website and click on Epoch-TV, you’ll be directed to NTD news stories, which are broadcast around the world, according to the company website. Both the Epoch Times and NTD, which formed a partnership in 2013, are part of the Epoch Media Group, which is affiliated with the Falun Gong religious movement, as is the Shen Yun dance troupe, which toured the Front Range earlier this year. Epoch Times is on sale in Denver-area Safeway stores and promoted locally on billboards and in direct mail.
Meanwhile, Evans is rejecting interview requests from 9News.
At the end of a news segment Wednesday, which was also about the budget bill, 9News anchor Kyle Clark reported, “We’ve invited Representative Evans to come on this program for several months now. We’ll keep asking.”
In recent months, Evans has granted interviews to other local and national news outlets, including CNN, Fox News Digital, CBS 4, Denver 7, Colorado Politics, conservative KNUS radio, and Axios Denver. He’s also appeared on another far-right online news outlet, Real America’s Voice (RAV), which routinely promotes conspiracy theories, carries Steve Bannon’s podcast, and produces content for Trump’s media company, Trump Media & Technology Group. As with NTD, Evans promotes his RAV interview on his official Congressional YouTube channel.
An email to Evans’ office asking why the congressman appears to favor other news outlets, including NTD, over 9News was not returned.
Other Colorado Republicans aligned with Epoch Times in recent years. In 2021, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert promoted a baseless conspiracy theory, traceable to Epoch Times, that Democrats would resign from the House en masse amid a scandal. She’s promoted multiple other Epoch Times stories on her X (formerly Twitter) feed. Former Colorado Congressman Ken Buck also promoted the newspaper or its content — and appeared on a TND show — prior to his resignation from Congress last year.
Evans represents Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, which is located mostly north and east of Denver. It’s the most competitive congressional district in Colorado — and also in the entire country. Evans defeated Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo in November by a margin of less than 1% (2,449 votes).
